This study investigates the relationship between Loneliness, Escapism, and Parasocial
Relationship among young adults, who regularly watch K-drama and anime. The Primary
aim was to examine whether higher levels of loneliness were associated with increased
escapist tendencies and stronger parasocial bonds with media characters. A Quantitative
research design was adopted, and data were collected from participants using
standardized tools, including UCLA Loneliness Scale developed by Russell (1996),
Escapism Scale developed by Stenseng, Rise, & Kraft and Parasocial Relationship
Scale developed by Tukachinsky and along with a self-structured questionnaire
assessing the K-drama or Anime viewing behaviour. The results indicated that individuals
experiencing higher level of loneliness were more likely to engage in escapism behaviour.
Additionally, loneliness showed a positive association with parasocial relationships,
suggesting that individuals may form emotional connections with fictional characters
as a coping mechanism. The findings highlight the psychological role of media
consumption in fulfilling emotional needs and managing loneliness. Overall, the study
provides insights into how K-drama and Anime viewing can influence emotional
experiences and behavioural patterns among viewers
