Social maturity are key indicators of functional outcomes in children with intellectual
and developmental disabilities (IDD) and are influenced by individual and contextual
factors. The present study examined social maturity in children with intellectual and
developmental disabilities (IDD), focusing on the influence of gender, age, level of severity,
and birth order. A sample of 46 children aged 5–16 years was assessed using
standardized measures of Vineland Social Maturity Scale. Results indicated
chronological age and social age had a significant difference. Gender and birth order
were not significantly associated with social development, however, chronological age
showed significant negative correlations with multiple adaptive domains, indicating a
widening developmental gap with increasing age. Level of severity emerged as the
strongest association of adaptive functioning, showing significant negative correlations
with overall and domain-specific adaptive behavior scores. The findings underscore the
central role of adaptive functioning in understanding developmental outcomes in children
with IDD and highlight the need for early, sustained, and severity-specific interventions
that prioritize functional and social skill development.
