This study aimed to translate and validate the Brief COPE into Tamil among 100 parents
of children aged 0–18 recruited from a community setting in Tamil Nadu. Using the
WHO forward-backward translation procedure, content validity was determined through
expert assessment (CVI = .94). Internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and splithalf
reliability were considered to assess the reliability. For testing the three-factor
hierarchical structure of the instrument, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used.
Reliability was found satisfactory for the overall questionnaire (á = .765, ICC = .700,
Spearman-Brown = .792), but CFA suggested that the three-factor model fitted poorly
across all indices, especially on Avoidant Coping factor. The Tamil BRIEF-COPE is
recommended for use at the total scale and 14 subscale levels. The three Higher-order
factor scores are not supported for use in Tamil-speaking populations
