Metacognition facilitates the ability in individuals to effectively plan, monitor, and evaluate
their own learning, while assuming control of the self-learning process. Researchers
claim learning as a powerful predictor of metacognition. Therefore, in order to examine
the metacognition in relation to critical thinking ability among the students of higher
education institutions, the present study was undertaken with 100 undergraduate
students studying in two faculties namely Arts and Science in S. S. J. University
campus, Almora (Uttarakhand). Metacognitive Awareness Inventory by Govil (2003)
and Murthy Critical Thinking Scale (2014) were used as data collection tools. Application
of Mann-Whitney U-test, Chi-square technique and Pearson correlation test revealed
that there exists a positive relationship between metacognition and critical thinking
ability. Findings of the study revealed that no relation exists between gender and streams
effects on metacognition and critical thinking ability.
