The Relationship between Material Value and Self-Esteem among Mizo Higher Secondary School Students
Pages:27-34
People often become materialistic to compensate for their feelings of insecurity and
inadequacy (Kasser et al., 2004) and tend to consider possessions as something that
will fetch them happiness (Richins et al., 2004) especially among youths. Therefore,
the present study explored the relationship between material values and self-esteem.
It also examined gender differences between the psychological variable among higher
secondary school students. The study comprised of 150 (75 males and 75 females)
higher secondary school students residing in Mizoram with age ranging between 15-18
years selected using random sampling procedure. Data was collected using the Material
Values Scale (MVS; Richins and Dawson, 1992) and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale
(SES; Rosenberg, 1965) along with Demographic Profiles constructed for the present
study. Psychometric adequacy and parametric statistic assumptions were checked,
Pearson correlation, One-WayANOVA were applied. The result showsmean differences
of the group and significant positive relationship was also found between the scale and
sub-scales of material value and self-esteem..
