Positive Youth Development (PYD) encompasses developmental assets associated
with one’s inner world and positive experiences derived from the external world, enabling
youth to cope with developmental challenges. Though the predictive effects of PYD in
mental health challenges are explored, the scarring effect of mental health indicators
on PYD and other well-being variables is still unmapped. In India, as a country with the
largest population of youth and having alarming concerns of youth-related mental health
issues, PYD-based mental health research is in a nascent stage. To bridge this lacuna,
a cross-sectional self-report study was carried out with a convenience sample (n =
301) of Indian youth currently enrolled in various colleges. This study looked at the
interrelationships between the study variables and investigated the function of PYD as
a mediator linking anxiety and depression to altruism, self-compassion, and life
satisfaction. Spearman correlation, simple mediation analysis, and path analysis were
performed to evaluate the interrelationship between the variables and their mediating
effects. The results indicated that PYD completely mediated the relationship between
depression and anxiety with altruism and partially mediated the relationship between
depression and anxiety with self-compassion and life satisfaction.
