Schizophrenia is increasingly understood as a neurodevelopmental disorder
characterized by considerable variations in clinical manifestations and developmental
trajectories. Advances in research has redirected focus from symptom-based models
to the biological mechanisms that play a role in learning, cognition and mental health
outcomes. Whole exome sequencing identified recurrent variants in several genes and
pathways involved in brain development and neuronal communication. The findings
were then interpreted within the broader framework on neurodevelopment and
psychological functioning. These observations may facilitate earlier recognition of
developmental vulnerabilities, support interdisciplinary approaches to mental health
care and inform educational and psychological interventions aimed at promoting resilience
and adaptive outcomes
