Building Resilience: The Role of Metacognitive Awareness and Self-esteem

Metacognition, self esteem and resilience has an important meaning in an individual’s
life. Previous studies mostly focused on adolescents and non general sample regarding
these variables. The study examines the role of metacognition and self esteem in
predicting resilience in adults. The sample comprised 111 participants (age range 18-
25 years) which consisted 67 females and 44 males, from different government colleges/
educational institutions from Varanasi region of Uttar Pradesh. The participants completed
the Metacognitive awareness inventory, Rosenberg’s Global Self-Esteem Scale, The
Resilience Scale. The regression analysis was performed which revealed that
metacognition emerged as a significant predictor whereas self-esteem did not predict
resilience significantly. The research findings suggest that since metacognition has a
significant role in predicting resilience in adults, efforts could be initiated in order to
augment the metacognitive abilities of an individual thereby indirectly enhancing
resilience and strengt
