The aim of the study is to explore the prevalence of mental disorders among adolescents
in Goa, India and to investigate the impact of family cohesion and parent-adolescent
communication on the prevalence of mental disorders among adolescents. A total of
472 adolescents between the age range of 14 to 18 years were recruited following the
multistage cluster sampling method. Findings disclosed that while family cohesion
may not particularly play an important role in the prevalence of mental disorders, parent
adolescent communication does have an impact on prevalence of mental health disorders
among adolescents’ in Goa. The study emphasizes the neglect which prevails in families
for parent-adolescent communication eventually increasing the risk for development of
mental health problems among adolescents.
