Present study aims to examine the status of the documents on meta-cognition in the
last two decades, published in the journals of Scopus and Web of Sciences (WOS)
databases. In this paper, the bibliometric analysis provides information about the
characteristics of the documents and current trends in the keywords, main research
areas, top authors, journals and main affiliations in metacognition literature during
2001-2021. The researcher collected about 2046 articles related to metacognition
literature for bibliometric analysis. ‘Biblioshinny’, a web-interface-based app for
bibliometric analysis, was used to generate the bibliometric map. It has been observed
that ‘Frontiers In Psychology’ placed at the top of the list of the most relevant sources.
On the other hand, in the journal list based on the ‘Source Local Impact by H index’,
‘Behaviour Research And Therapy’ has placed at the top position. Further, it has found
that ‘USA’ is the leading country in the total number of citations, while ‘University Of
Manchester’ placed at the peak, in the list of top twenty most relevant countries
publishing articles and affiliations. Whereas the words “metacognition” and “meta
cognition” are most frequently used in titles, abstracts, and author’s keywords. This
bibliometric analysis study focused on investigating the research trends in terms of
journals, authors, keywords, citations and themes in meta-cognitive literature. Moreover,
it provides useful information for researchers and scholars to get insight into the area of
meta-cognition. The current area of study has great potential for future development in
relation to various psychological aspects and students’ learning
