Resilience and Hope are linked to better academic performance, increased graduation
rates, and lower dropout rates. The study investigated Resilience and Hope among
students with disability pursuing higher education in the state of Assam. The sample
included 30 male and 30 female (n=60) pursuing higher education in Assam. Purposive
sampling and snowball sampling was used here. The study sought to find out the
gender differences in Hope and Resilience, difference in Hope and Resilience of students
from different categories of disability (visual impairment, hearing impairment and
locomotor disability), and a correlation between Hope and Resilience. “Brief Resilience
Scale (BRS)” and “Adult Dispositional Hope Scale (ADHS)” were employed. t-test
revealed no significant differences in Hope (t=1.387) and Resilience (t=0.781) between
male and female genders, in Hope (F=2.831) and Resilience (F=1.219) among three
different categories of disability. Also, a moderately positive correlation (+0.46) between
Hope and Resilience was found. A thematic analysis developed by Braun and Clarke
(2006) was conducted with the top and bottom 5% scorers. The results will help in
formulating psychological interventions for people with low Hope and Resilience to help
them function better and cope with difficulties, in formulation of guidelines to address
the mental health needs and facilitation in higher studies.
