Divorce is a major stressful life event associated with widespread impact on lower
mental health, decline in well-being, increase in depression, anxiety and stress as well
as leading towards suicidal ideation due to loss of an intimate partner. The aim of the
present study was to explore the effects of Divorce on Mental Health and Coping Strategy
among Divorcees. The participants of the present research were recruited from Civil
Court, Patna, Bihar. 40 consenting participants aged 18 – 50 years were interviewed to
gather socio-demographic information, and then Mental Health Inventory (Jagdish and
Shrivastava, 1983), Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21 (Lovibond and
Lovibond,1995) and Brief Cope Scale 28 (Carver, 1997) was administered. The present
research study was approved by the ethical committee of the University. It was found
that there is no significant association between mental health and gender of the divorcees.
Similarly, no significant association was also found between coping strategies and
gender of the divorcees. There was no significant association observed only on depression
and gender of the divorcees of but significant association was observed on stress and
anxiety in relation to gender of the divorcees. The significance level for the present
study was kept at p<0.05.
