Social awareness, social perspective-taking, and emotional regulation are critical
milestones expected to develop during adolescence. The shift from offline to online
education has increased adolescents’ digital presence, reducing opportunities for
evaluating their Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies. This study aimed to
investigate the relationship between internet addiction and various SEL components.
SEL competencies were measured using Panorama Education’s SEL scale, while
internet addiction was assessed using Young’s Internet Addiction Scale. The sample
comprised 60 adolescent boys and girls aged 15 to 17 from various schools in Chennai.
Data were collected via Google Forms questionnaires, descriptive statistics, and
Pearson’s correlation, which were used for data analysis. The study found significant
relationships between internet addiction and grit, self-management, self-efficacy, learning
strategy, classroom effort, engagement, and valuing of school. However, no significant
relationship was found between internet addiction and behavioral mindset or emotional
regulation. These findings suggest that pathological internet use affects several SEL
competencies in adolescents.
