The Role of Personality Traits, Parent-Child Relation along with Residential Background, Economical Status on Emotional Adjustment among JEE and NEET Aspirants

Mental health issues among the NEET and JEE aspirants have become one of the
important concerning matters in India due to the immense academic pressure and
competition. The objective of the study is to measure the levels of depression, anxiety,
stress, positive ideation and negative ideation of participants divided into two groups
JEE& NEET Aspirants and Non aspirants along with the gender difference. Aim of the
study is understanding the relationship between personality traits, parent -child
relationship with anxiety, stress and depression. The influence of residential background
on emotional adjustment also identified. Quantitative data was collected through applying
inventories and scales. 114 individuals are participated in the study. (60 males and 54
females) ANOVA, ANCOVA, Independent ‘t’ test and Pearson’s Correlation coefficient
has been applied. Results revealed significant difference in the levels of depression,
stress, and anxiety among the JEE and NEET aspirants across different socio
demographical categories. Participants from suburban regions reported more depressive
symptoms and psychological distress than other participants those are from rural
background. A significant difference in depression and stress was also observed based
on parent -child relationship. Personality traits, particularly neuroticism, were associated
with elevated levels of depression and anxiety. Conscientiousness is also found as
important predictor of stress and negative ideation. This study promotes emotional
support, encourages open parent-child communication, recognizes personality
vulnerabilities, helps to create access to mental health counselling and peer support
networks
