The study aims to examine gender (male and female) and school (private and
government) differences on mental health by employing the ‘Depression, Anxiety
and Stress Scale’ (DASS-21; Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995) & ‘The Satisfaction with
Life Scale’ (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985). 200 high school students
(100 private high school students (50 female and 50 male) and 100 government high
school students (50 female and 50 male) served as samples which were collected
through random sampling procedures from different schools within Aizawl city. Results
indicated significant different levels of depression, anxiety, stress and life satisfaction
among the comparison groups; significant negative relationship between stress and
life satisfaction; independent significant effect of ‘gender’ and ‘type of school’ on stress
and life satisfaction; and significant interaction effect of ‘gender and type of school’ on
dependent variables. The findings highlight the need of identifying and intervening on
the mental health of adolescents..
