Tempting Behaviour: Prevalence Across Bio-Social Demographic Variables Among College Students

Tempting behaviour refers to any observable behaviour, action, stimulus or situation
that induces a strong, uncontrollable urge or desire to get absorbed into certain activities
or actions which the person is deeply interested in, giving them hedonic wellbeing.
Tempting behaviour is referred as tempting activities in this research. These tempting
activities gives only temporary pleasure leading to negative consequences. With news
reports and statistics indicating the onset of psychological concerns much earlier in
adolescents and youth, this study aims to categorise the prevalence of tempting
activities among college students. Before initiating the prevalence survey, the names
of tempting activities were identified through 100 male and female college students
studying psychology in various colleges through convenient sampling technique. Later
the main data for the prevalence study was collected from 1208 participants using
survey method from arts and science colleges in Coimbatore district. The participants
were asked to choose one option from the various tempting activities that applies to
them in their day-to-day life. Demographic details such as gender, living environment,
residential status, family structure and quality time spent with parents were collected.
The findings revealed that temptation related to internet usage, social media, smartphone
dependence scrolling mobile phones, watching web-series or Korean series prevailed
among both males and female college students. It is also identified that there are few
gender specific tempting activities. The data revealed that male students exhibited
betting, bike racing and trading as their tempting behaviour while females exhibited
shopping, application of sunscreens, tempting activities. This study paves way for
further in-depth researches on tempting activities and identifying the effects and
association of the bio-psycho-social demographic variables, and other psychological
constructs on tempting activities respectively.
