Adolescent Behavioral Problems in Context: Correlating Family Functioning and School Environment with Internalizing and Externalizing Dimensions

The present study aims to investigate the behavioral problems of adolescents in relation
to family functioning and school environment. Data was collected from the students at
higher secondary level from Thrissur district, Kerala. The sample size was 200. Both
male and female adolescents was included. Data was collected using Behavioural
Problem Scale by Eshrat Ara, , Family Function (Family Apgar) Scale by Smilkstein
G, School Environment Scale (SES) by Fend and Prester. There is no significant
difference was observed between male and female adolescents in internalizing (t=.143)
and externalizing (t=1.588) behavioral problems. There is a significant positive correlation
between internalizing (r=.366; p<.01) and externalizing (r=.308; p<.05) behavioral
problems in family functioning. A positive correlation between school environment and
internalizing (r=.166) and externalizing (r=.089) behavioral problems. The findings of
the present study may provide useful information to parents, family members and
teachers to take extra measures to uphold the adolescents to the society because
parent, family and teachers are the protective factors for the proper behavior development
and also helps in developing prevention and intervention programs for adolescent
behavioral problems.
