Academic Stress among NEET Aspirants: Influence of Selected Demographic Variables

This study investigated different levels of academic stress among the NEET aspirants
undergoing NEET coaching from different places located in Dakshina Kannada District
of Karnataka state. The Sample comprised of 100 male and 100 females age ranging
from 16 to 20 years and were chosen from four pre-university colleges. The aspirants
completed Academic stress inventory (Lin & Shen, 2009). Distribution of the sample
shows that majority 50.5% of the NEET aspirants had fallen in the high level of academic
stress, followed by 46% of them in the moderate level of academic stress and remaining
3.5 percent of them in low levels of academic stress. The result of Chi-square test
revealed a significant frequency difference (X2=80.710, p=.001) between high, moderate
and low levels of stress, confirming that majority of the sample possessed high levels
of academic stress. Male NEET aspirants found to have slightly higher level of academic
stress compared to that of female aspirants. Independent sample t test revealed nonsignificant
mean difference between the stress levels of male and female NEET aspirants.
The mean Academic stress scores of urban NEET aspirants found to be slightly higher
than that of the rural aspirants. Independent t test revealed a non-significant mean
difference between the stress levels of urban and rural NEET aspirants.
