The present study attempts to explore the factors that thwart and facilitate positive
development among institutionalized orphan adolescents. Using a semi-structured
interview schedule, individual in-depth interviews were conducted on12 institutionalized
orphan adolescents (8 girls and 4 boys) from orphanages. Semi-structured interview
schedule covering domains like strengths, challenges, happiness, and perception about
present and future life was used to collect the data. Thematic analysis provided insight
into participant’s perspective about the factors that affects their development. Risk
factors include parental loss, lack of social connection, challenges in adapting to a
new environment, obstacles to personal growth, and challenges to realizing one’s
aspirations. The protective factors include internal strength, supportive caregivers of
institutions, positive patterns of friendship, significant influence of non-parental adults,
and scholarship from sponsors. Parental loss and institutionalization have a negative
effect on orphaned adolescents, yet it is also noted that they also demonstrate resilience
and thrive through the vulnerability. Institutionalization provided a safe place to live and
allows adolescents to complete their education; nevertheless, adapting to the institution
is challenging for adolescents. Lack of connection with siblings and extended family
adversely affect adolescents whereas relationship with friends, teachers, and caregivers
helps adolescents with their positive development. Policies and intervention to facilitate
positive development of orphan adolescents is essential and needs attention
