Gender Parity and Students’ Self-Esteem: A Qualitative Investigation

The present paper is an attempt to find out the self-esteem of male and female secondary
school students of Shillong town and the reasons responsible for the same. The objectives
of the present study are; (i) to study the various dimension of Self-esteem of male and
female secondary school students (ii) To find out the reasons responsible for selfesteem among the two sexes. A semi-structured interview schedule was devised by
the researchers to tap into the self-esteem of higher secondary school students at
various dimensions. Findings reveal that there is not much disparity among the two
sexes in the levels of self-esteem of secondary school students. Though from the
participants responses it reveals that male students are more active and have achieved
more in life apart from academics which helps the male participant to be more confident
and are able to appreciate themselves better
