What’s in the Cyberbully’s Mind? Understanding the Causes of Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying, a form of digital harassment, involves using digital platform and other
online media and apps to intentionally and deliberately harass or harm another individual.
Today’s adolescents are witnessing a significant increase in cyberbullying incidents
and the negative impact it leaves on the cyberbullied victim. The present paper aims to
evaluate and explore the root causes and underlying factors driving cyberbullying
behaviour among the adolescents. Using a systematic literature review method using
PRISMA, relevant databases and journals were searched for relevant research papers.
Research paper focussing on the cyberbullying causes and factors were included in
the study. 41 studies were extracted and were incorporated into the analysis based on
the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Overall, four main factors were identified – societal
and parental factors focusing on society, parenting style and relations; psychological
factors, including personality and dispositional factors; technical factors, encompassing
internet access, internet addiction and Individual factors including factor of revenge,
retaliation, and previous bully experience, along with some overlapping factors. The
paper discusses the interventions and suggestions to mitigate the incidents of
cyberbullying and its impact on cyberbullied victim.
