Adolescence is a stage of human development where adolescents experience rapid
physical, cognitive and psychosocial. When there is a state of emotional exhaustion
during adolescence in which innumerable difficulties are perceived, suicidal behavior
may appear as a coping mechanism. One protective factor against suicidal ideation
and behavior in adolescents is emotional intelligence. The purpose of the present study
is to look at the differences and relationships between Suicidal Ideation and Emotional
Intelligence between male and female school students in Jammu, J&K. It has a total of
100 students, 50 of whom are males and 50 of whom are females. The data was
collected using convenient sampling techniques. Independent t-test and Pearson
correlation were used for carrying out differences and relationship respectively. The
findings of the study show that more than 52 % students have average suicide ideation
and 15 % and 3% students have high and very high suicidal ideation respectively. It
also shows significant difference of Emotional Intelligence among males and females.
However, there is no significant difference of Suicidal Ideation among males and females.
The correlation analysis shows negative relationship between emotional intelligence
and suicidal ideation. Mean score of female students in the variables of Emotional
Intelligence is more than male students, whereas mean score of male students in the
variables of suicidal ideation is more than female students. This can be suggested that
male students are more prone to suicidal ideation.
