Online and offline video games have increased leisure activity among adolescents.
WHO recently classified Gaming Disorder as a psychiatric condition in the ICD-11.
The present study assessed the influence of online gaming-related variables and
psychological characteristics among adolescents with Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD).
The cross-sectional study included 452 participants from government and private schools
across Delhi NCR, selected using purposive sampling. Students were evaluated using
the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-short form (IGDS9), Strength and Difficulty
Questionnaire (SDQ), and socio-demographic and online gaming-related variables data
sheets. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 29. About 64.2% of male participants
reported playing online games. The study found a significant link between IGD and
various emotional and behavioral issues among adolescents. Mann-Whitney U Test
results indicated those involved in combat, role-play, and simulation genre-related games
displayed significant differences in hyperactivity and emotional and peer problems.
Regression analysis suggested the amount of time spent gaming and involvement in
certain game genres may predict IGD at the trend level. Overall, the findings indicated
that online gaming-related variables and psychological characteristics play a significant
role in affecting and maintaining IGD among adolescents.
