The modern work-life is characterized by uncertain conditions, speed of technology
and tough competition which puts extra pressure on employees leading to fear and
stress. Researches conducted previously have proven that Emotional Intelligence has
a significant impact on the organizational life of an employee and it is important for an
employee to understand his own emotions and regulate them. Demographic variables
find a relevant place in studies involving psychological or behavioral constructs since
these variables along with others can explain why a person thinks or behaves in a way.
Hence, in this study an attempt has been made to understand whether demographic
variables play an important role in emotional intelligence of employees. The aim of this
paper is to study the relation between demographic variables like work experience,
age, gender, marital status and Emotional Intelligence (EI) of employees in Guwahati
Region of North-East India. This study is based on primary data collected from 400
executives who are working in private service organizations -telecommunication,
insurance and banking in Guwahati region. The standardized test developed by Dalip
Singh and Chadha consisting of 22-items was used to measure Emotional Intelligence
in this study. The data was analyzed using Pearson correlation, regression analysis, ttest and ANOVA. The findings indicated that there is a positive correlation between EI
and age and work experience of employees. No significant difference was found in EI of
male and female employees but EI was found to be significantly different for married
and single individuals. The findings of this study can aid HR decision making in areas
such as recruitment, selection and succession planning.
