Ladakhi youth migrate outside Ladakh to pursue higher education as facilities at their
native place are poor. Improvements in economic standing of Ladakhi households,
improvements in exam results, and the granting of Scheduled Tribe status to the majority
of the Ladakhi population are other factors that increased educational migration.
Educational migration implies adjustment to new conditions of life, assimilating to new
surroundings and cultural practices that can lead to considerable levels of acculturative
stress which may increase the experience of anxiety and depression. The objective of
the present study was to investigate anxiety and depression amongst Ladakhi college
students studying in and outside Ladakh. Beck’s Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety
Inventory were administered on a sample of 60 college students- 30 were studying in
Ladakh and 30 were studying outside Ladakh. Results revealed significant difference
in the level of anxiety and depression among Ladakhi college students. Students
studying in Ladakh exhibited moderate level of anxiety and depression while those
studying outside Ladakh indicated mild level of anxiety and depression.
